After completing the 'Girls Night Out' research project, Walks of the Street aimed to develop a new framework of street design which would be focused on improving the perception of safety people experience in the public realm.
To do this, we need to change the way we look at cities, neighbourhoods and streets. The current system of typology arrangement not only limits street design possibilities but also forms pre-convinced ideas about certain areas which will automatically induce a sense of fear even if there is no reason to be scared. That is why this project focuses on creating new street typologies which don’t revolve around the buildings on the street, but instead, the urban strategies which fill the public space.
Moving forward, designing our streets as active, vibrant, illuminated, sociable, human or green streets allows for much more innovative and exciting design solutions than traditional residential, commercial or industrial streets would. Each of these typologies has its own strengths in terms of perceptions of safety whether it's bringing more life to a place, improving the relationships created, or changing the emotions experienced and therefore, they can start to make our streets feel safer for everyone.
